For the last twenty years, the two local shipyards have participated in the construction of several offshore units, including a semisubmersible plaform and several Floating Storage and Offloading (FSO) and Floating Production, Storage and Offloading (FPSO) vessels.

The last few years have seen a sudden reduction in the production of offshore units at the shipyard of Navantia Fene, mainly due to the global market situation as well as the lack of backing from the government. However, the shipyard of Navantia Ferrol has increased its workload noticeably with the construction of several frigates for the Spanish Navy as well as the construction of the Nansen Class frigates for the Norwegian Navy.

All in all, the activities carried out in these two main shipyards have originated a thriving environment of workshops and engineering offices who have been successufully backing the shipyards. At the same time, the area of Ferrol now counts with two different engineering schools belonging to the University of A Coruña, ensuring a steady flow of young engineers graduating every year.
